Emerald’s Unruly Little Landscape

Grey, cream and tan lead the palette of this emerald piece, interrupted by dark green, pale blue-green and scattered brown and near-black patches. Its coarse surface is full of contrasts: densely packed, flaky-looking textures meet angular faces, while small bright highlights catch along the uneven contours. Deep recesses hold darker shadows, giving each ridge a distinct presence.

A broad lower portion and irregular edges give the piece an upright, asymmetrical outline. There is something pleasingly untamed about it, with no smooth curve to settle the eye. The ridges suggest an imagined terraced garden: pale paths threading between green beds, with shadow tucked beneath each step. Above this little landscape, the uneven raised top becomes a wonderfully rugged skyline.
