Howlite is a borate mineral discovered in Nova Scotia in 1868 by Henry How, a Canadian chemist, geologist, and mineralogist. It's a porous stone and naturally white or grey with streaks - the porous characteristic makes it a perfect candidate for dyeing. Dyed howlite is often used as a more affordable alternative to more costly stones, most notably turquoise.
